“On behalf of the Manitoba Professional Fire Fighters Association, I want to express our full support for the brave and dedicated members serving in Thompson under incredibly difficult conditions. The current staffing crisis—where only 10 of 24 firefighter positions are filled—is not only unsustainable, it’s dangerous.
Our members in Thompson continue to show exceptional commitment and resilience, responding to emergencies with professionalism and courage, despite working excessive overtime and enduring the physical and mental toll of 24+ hour shifts. The recent fire incident was a clear example of their dedication, where they prevented further damage and ensured no loss of life or injury, even while operating under extreme strain.
But this cannot continue.
This alarming 58% vacancy rate demands immediate action. The City of Thompson must prioritize firefighter safety and public protection by taking urgent steps to fill these critical vacancies. If they don’t, the risks will only grow—and we may face a tragedy that could have been prevented.
Our members deserve better. The people of Thompson deserve better.
